Sick fucking joke rich in irony, illustrating the absolute hypocrisy of the U.S. State Department. Under Carter and Reagan the U.S. spearheaded efforts alongside Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Afghan landlords to create a "Jihad" against the secular & socialist People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) which sought modernization, development, and relative social equality for Afghans. Because the "Evil Empire" (USSR) backed the PDPA, the U.S. armed, equipped, and provided logistical support to groups that employed tactics like throwing acid in the faces of women who didn't wear veils.

As we all know, the jihadists later formed well-known groups like the Taliban,al-Qaeda, ISIS, et cetera.

A 1979 classified memo by the State Department deemed that U.S. interests "would be served by the demise of the [PDPA] regime, despite whatever setbacks this might mean for future social and economic reforms in Afghanistan." (source)

National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski, visiting the Afghan-Pakistan border, told the U.S.-backed Islamists at the time: "That land over there is yours and you’ll go back to it some day, because your fight will prevail, and you’ll have your homes, your mosques, back again, because your cause is right, and god is on your side." (source)

Samir Amin, cutting through the BS, had a much better description for this brand of U.S.-backed Islamism: "Political Islam is not anti-imperialist, even if its militants think otherwise. It is an invaluable imperialist ally... political Islam has always counted in its ranks the ruling classes of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Moreover, these classes were among its most active promoters from the very beginning. The local comprador bourgeoisies, the nouveaux riches, beneficiaries of current imperialist ‘development’, generously support political Islam...which renounced anti-imperialism substituted for it an 'anti-Western' (almost 'anti-Christian') position, which does not form an obstacle to imperialist control over the world system... Political Islam is not the spontaneous result of authentic religious convictions...Political Islam was constructed systematically by imperialism, supported of course, by obscurantist reactionary forces and subservient comprador classes."
