yANKS AND THE 'wEST' UNHAPPY WITH NIGERIA DEVELOPING AFRICAN-CENTRED SECURITY STRATEGIES

Very interesting pieces HERE on Western plans to dismember Nigeria. Wikileaks revealed that the US were upset by Nigeria's success in establishing a regional peacekeeping organisation, ECOMOG, without any involvement of the Western powers, which was capable of overseeing and implementing successful peace deals in Liberia and Sierra Leone in 1997. They set up ACRI (African Crises Response Initiative) (actually the forerunner of AFRICOM) in an attempt to marginalise ECOMOG and Nigeria, by buying off various African countries and excluding Nigeria. Nigeria's independence is clearly seen as a problem for the US, and the war against Libya, in empowering groups like Boko Haram was aimed also at destabilising Nigeria. Having destabilised, they can then pose as saviours who will go in and 'deal with the problem' they created. This is what is called a protection racket. - Dan Glazebrook
